How to Choose a Radiator: Heat Pumps, BTU & Complete UK Guide 2026

Here at Luxury Plumbing we not only pride ourselves on stocking the best of the best when it comes to radiators, our team will also help you find the best one to fit your specific room. Whether you've just purchased a new commercial space, are building a home from the ground up, or you're simply thinking, "Why is my room so cold?!" - we are happy to help you think about which radiator can work for your space.

Choosing a new radiator can seem daunting at first. New unrecognisable vocab (What is high-BTU anyway?!), attaching it to your wall, and figuring out where to place a radiator in your room - all of these things can be confusing at first. Hopefully we can answer some of your questions and get you from "Why's my room so cold?" to "I can't wait to get home to my cosy sitting room!"

High-BTU?

First let's break it down. What is a High BTU radiator? High BTU (British Thermal Unit) radiators are designed to produce a larger amount of heat making them the best choice to heat larger spaces, open concept plans, and rooms with high ceilings. An open plan kitchen with access to a sitting room and dining room would be a perfect candidate for a high BTU radiator.

Basically, the higher the BTU the more heat it generates. A BTU too low will leave your room feeling cold, but too high will waste energy and not be too kind to your pockets. Choosing the wrong BTU radiator is the most common problem when your room isn't quite feeling the right temperature.

Radiator Types

After thinking about which BTU might suit your room, we've got to think about types and sizes of radiators.

  • Horizontal radiators: Ideal for shorter ceiling rooms, under windows, or in long hallways. They come in single or double panel depending on your desired heat output.
  • Vertical radiators: Tall, space-saving and perfect for limited wall space.
  • Column radiators: Come in both horizontal or vertical and achieve a more traditional vintage look.
  • Designer radiators: Have a more unique look and can become a piece of wall art or the focal point of a room.
  • Towel rails: Have a ladder like design made for warming towels in your bathroom.
  • Aluminium radiators: Heat fast and are eco friendly while steel holds heat longer.
Performance Metric Aluminium Radiator Steel Radiator
Heat-Up Time Very Fast (~5–10 mins) Moderate (~20–30 mins)
Cool-Down Time Fast (Cools quickly) Slow (Holds heat longer)
Best Room Use Bedrooms, Offices, Guest Rooms Living Rooms, High-Ceiling Hallways

What's All This Talk About Heat Pumps?

Many UK homes have been making the switch to energy efficient electric appliances. A heat pump **moves** heat rather than generating it, requiring larger radiators (Delta T30/T40) compared to standard gas boilers (Delta T50).

Feature Gas Boiler (Standard) Heat Pump (Efficient)
Typical Delta Delta T 50 Delta T 30
Water Temp Very Hot (approx 70°C) Lukewarm (approx 45°C)
Heat Style Short, intense bursts Long, steady warmth

Delta ΔT 50: The water is so hot that even a small radiator can blast enough heat to warm the room.

Delta ΔT 30: The water is only gently warm. To get that same warmth, you need a much bigger radiator.
