Should I choose a compact panel radiator or a small designer column model?

The decision depends on whether you need the radiator to disappear into the room or serve as a decorative feature. Compact panel radiators are designed with a slim profile and integrated top grilles to provide maximum heat while remaining as unobtrusive as possible, making them ideal for behind doors or under low windows. Small designer column radiators are deeper and more substantial; they hold more water and provide a higher level of radiant heat, which is often better for taking the chill off a cold cloakroom. While compact panels are more discreet, a small traditional radiator can turn a restricted wall space into a deliberate design choice.

Is a small vertical radiator better than a small horizontal one for a cloakroom?

In smaller rooms like cloakrooms or en-suites, wall space is the most valuable commodity. A small horizontal radiator often dictates where you can place other fixtures, whereas a slim vertical model utilizes the "dead space" higher up the wall. Technically, a vertical model allows you to fit a unit with a much higher BTU output into a narrow 300mm or 400mm gap that would otherwise be unusable. A radiator’s size does not always dictate its power; its configuration does. These units feature two layers of convection fins sandwiched between the panels, effectively doubling or tripling the heat output of a single-panel radiator of the same size. For spaces like hallways that are prone to draughts, a small but high-output double radiator is a far better technical solution than a larger single-panel model that might not meet the thermal requirements of the room.

Can I install a small radiator on a thin partition wall?

Because small radiators have a lower water capacity, they are significantly lighter than standard-sized units, making them much easier to install on internal stud or partition walls. However, the projection from the wall still matters for safety in tight spaces. For narrow thoroughfares, we recommend choosing a "slimline" model with a low projection depth to prevent the unit from becoming a trip hazard. If you are concerned about the weight of a steel unit on a particularly thin wall, an aluminium radiator is the superior choice as it offers the highest heat-to-weight ratio available.

Do small radiators require different valves to standard ones?

Small radiators use the same standard 15mm connections as any other radiator, but the "visual scale" of the valves is more important. Using large, bulky valves on a very small radiator can look disproportionate and may make it difficult to fit the unit into a tight corner. We recommend using compact coloured radiator valves that match the finish of your radiator. Choosing "manual" valves can also save space compared to bulkier thermostatic heads, though TRVs remain the more energy-efficient choice for maintaining a steady temperature in small rooms.

What is the most efficient way to heat a small room without central heating?

If you are adding a radiator to a small space like a box room or a new en-suite where extending the pipework is too disruptive, an electric solution is often the most cost-effective path. Small electric radiators offer the advantage of independent control, meaning you can heat that specific room without turning on the entire house. Many modern electric models feature 24/7 timers and precision thermostats, ensuring that small, infrequently used rooms are only heated when necessary, which prevents the spike in energy costs often associated with older electric heaters.
