Central Heating
Central heating radiators are the backbone of your home’s heating system, turning hot water from your boiler into comfortable warmth for every room. Unlike electric radiators that plug into the wall, central heating radiators connect directly to your home’s pipework and work alongside your existing boiler to heat your space efficiently.
How Central Heating Radiators Work
Your boiler heats water to around 70-80°C, then pumps it through pipes to each radiator in your home. Inside the radiator, this hot water flows through internal channels, heating the steel panels or aluminium fins. As the metal warms up, it radiates heat into your room while also creating gentle air circulation that spreads warmth evenly.
The cooled water then returns to your boiler to be reheated, creating a continuous cycle. This system means you get consistent heat throughout your home from a single energy source, making it much more cost-effective than heating each room separately.
Steel vs Aluminium Central Heating Radiators
Steel radiators are the most common choice for central heating systems. They heat up steadily and hold their temperature well, giving you reliable warmth that lasts. A typical 600x1200mm double-panel steel radiator produces around 4,500 BTU 50, making it suitable for most average-sized rooms.
Aluminium radiators heat up much faster – often 3 times quicker than traditional steel models. This means you feel the warmth sooner after switching on your heating, but they also cool down faster when the heating turns off. Aluminium works particularly well in homes where you want rapid temperature control, such as when using smart thermostats or room-by-room heating schedules.
Choosing the Right Size and Output
Getting the right size radiator makes a huge difference to your comfort and energy bills. A radiator that’s too small will struggle to heat your room properly, leaving cold spots and running constantly. One that’s too large wastes energy and can make rooms uncomfortably hot.
Room size directly affects the BTU output you need. For example, a 3×4 metre living room with standard 2.4m ceilings typically needs around 6,000-7,000 BTU 50. You can achieve this with either a single large radiator like an 1800x600mm double-panel model, or two smaller radiators such as 1200x600mm single panels positioned on different walls.
Height and width also matter for practical reasons. Vertical radiators work well in rooms with limited wall space, while horizontal radiators often provide better heat distribution across larger rooms. Most central heating radiators come in standard pipe centres of 50mm from the wall, though some compact models use 35mm centres.
Installation and Pipework
Central heating radiator installation involves connecting to your existing hot water flow and return pipes. Most homes use 15mm copper pipes that run from your boiler to each radiator location. The radiator connects to these pipes through radiator valves – typically a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) on one side and a lockshield valve on the other.
TRV valves let you control the temperature in each room independently. When the room reaches your set temperature, the TRV automatically reduces hot water flow to that radiator, saving energy while maintaining comfort. This is particularly useful in bedrooms where you might want cooler temperatures, or south-facing rooms that get natural solar heating.
If you’re replacing an existing radiator, the job is usually straightforward as long as the new radiator’s pipe centres match your current setup. Adding radiators to new locations requires extending your pipework, which affects the overall pressure and flow in your heating system.
Brands and Quality
Quality makes a real difference in central heating radiators. Better construction means fewer leaks, more even heat distribution, and longer lifespan. Most quality radiators come with comprehensive guarantees, protecting your investment and giving you confidence in your heating system.
Energy Efficiency and Running Costs
Modern central heating radiators are designed to work efficiently with condensing boilers, maximizing the heat you get from every unit of gas or oil. The key is matching your radiators to your boiler’s output and your home’s heat loss characteristics.
Lower temperature systems (around 60°C flow temperature) work particularly well with larger radiators or those with enhanced surface areas. This approach lets your condensing boiler operate more efficiently, potentially reducing your heating bills by 10-15% compared to older high-temperature systems.
Smart controls and TRV valves add another layer of efficiency. By heating rooms only when needed and maintaining precise temperatures, you avoid the waste that comes from overheating spaces or running heating when rooms are unoccupied.
